Abstract

This workshop investigates how artistic practices emerge from—and respond to—the conditions under which care is organised. Participants engage in a small artistic research process using a matchbox as a carrier of observation and reflection. We visit local art spaces around the Zonnehuis where artists care for the social environment through their work. We ask questions such as: how do pressurizing conditions shape what care can be? And what kinds of artistic methods emerge from this? Drawing from experiences in the social work field, we explore how these practices are both dependent on and intervene in their context. By creating “boxes of care,” participants explore care as something that emerges from tension—fragile, relational, and politically charged.

In deze workshop onderzoeken we hoe artistieke praktijken voortkomen uit – en reageren op – de omstandigheden waarin zorg wordt georganiseerd. Deelnemers gaan aan de slag met een klein artistiek onderzoek, waarbij we een luciferdoosje gebruiken als drager van observatie en reflectie. We bezoeken lokale kunstateliers in de omgeving van het Zonnehuis, plaatsen waar kunstenaars via hun werk zorg dragen voor hun sociale omgeving. We stellen vragen als: hoe bepalen stressvolle omstandigheden wat zorg kan zijn? Welke artistieke methoden komen hieruit voort? Op basis van ervaringen in de sociale sector onderzoeken we hoe deze praktijken zowel afhankelijk zijn van als ingrijpen in hun omstandigheden. Door ‘zorgdoosjes’ te maken, verkennen deelnemers zorg als iets dat voortkomt uit spanningsvelden – kwetsbaar, relationeel en politiek geladen.

What to expect: 

We begin at the Zonnehuis and walk through the neighbourhood along local art spaces. Along the way, participants observe, reflect, and create their own “box of care.” Expect a combination of walking, making, and exchange, as we explore the conditions that shape caring art practices.

We beginnen bij het Zonnehuis en wandelen door de wijk langs lokale kunstruimtes. Onderweg kijken de deelnemers om zich heen, denken ze na en stellen ze hun eigen ‘zorgdoosje’ samen. Verwacht een combinatie van wandelen, knutselen en uitwisseling, terwijl we onderzoeken welke omstandigheden zorggerichte kunstpraktijken vormgeven.

BLOB is an artistic collective inspired by the blobfish—a creature that derives its form from the pressures of its environment. In our practice, we make visible the conditions that make art possible, such as care practices, maintenance, and embodied labor, conditions that often remain invisible. We depart from the idea that constraining or pressurizing conditions do not only limit, but are also generative. From this pressure, artistic methods emerge that are rooted in sensitivity, adaptability, and relational awareness. What arises from this is not only critical, but also caring: practices that simultaneously hold, question, and transform the conditions from which they emerge.
