In this workshop, paper, ink, colors, and light invite you to write, draw, and create a narrative of care. An open space to fill with experience and the layers of past, present, or imagined gestures of care. Together, we create one collective canvas as a shared trace of this moment. In whichever way they need to be expressed, personal or abstract, these contributions leave traces, connecting the lives of strangers and rewriting the narratives of care. Perhaps within this approach lies an opening to be more inclusive in how we practice and organize our care. We inform ourselves with knowledge that may not be easily captured in words, yet brings us close to a deep, interhuman understanding of things. The canvas as a narrative workspace.

In deze workshop nodigen papier, inkt, kleuren en licht je uit om te schrijven, te tekenen en zo een verhaal over zorg te creëren. Het is een open ruimte om te vullen met ervaringen en de lagen van verleden, heden of gefantaseerde gebaren van zorg. Samen creëren we één collectief doek als een gedeeld spoor van dit moment. Op welke manier ze ook tot uitdrukking komen, persoonlijk of abstract, deze bijdragen laten sporen na. Ze verbinden de levens van vreemden en herschrijven verhalen van zorg. Misschien ligt in deze benadering een opening om inclusiever te zijn in hoe we onze zorg geven en organiseren. We voeden onszelf met kennis die misschien niet gemakkelijk in woorden te vatten is, maar die ons toch dicht bij een diep, intermenselijk begrip van de dingen brengt. Het doek als narratieve werkruimte.

What to expect: 

Gather around a collective paper scroll to write, color, and trace using ink, thread and other materials. After a brief philosophical reflection, you will collaborate with the artist to create a shared visual narrative. Expect an indoor space for making and reflection, where personal gestures of care weave into a collective artwork.

Kom samen rond een papieren rol om gezamenlijke te schrijven, te kleuren en sporen te maken met inkt, draad en andere materialen. Na een korte filosofische reflectie werk je samen met de kunstenaar aan een gezamenlijk visueel verhaal. Verwacht een ruimte in het Zonnehuis voor creativiteit en bezinning, waar persoonlijke gebaren van zorg samenkomen in een collectief kunstwerk.

About the maker:

Merel Thijs is a painter, philosopher, and occupational therapist who explores the space where care and creativity meet. Drawing on a Master’s in Philosophy (VUB) and a background in Occupational Therapy (PXL), she currently investigates the role of aesthetics in elderly care at Hasselt University. Through her artistic practice, Merel uses the creative process as a tool for reflecting on the ‘good’ and the ‘beautiful,’ inviting others to view the world of care through an artistic lens.
