Consent in Action: Ethics in and for Artistic Research

Abstract

What does it mean to work ethically in artistic and participatory research, beyond checklists and standard forms? And how do we consider important topics like consent, authorship, and what is at stake in artistic and participatory work? In this session, we will delve together into questions on Consent in Action (based on our article: Learning from Artistic Research within an Institutional Review Context.) There are three key principles here: vulnerability, multiple forms of consent, and attention to power and positionality.

Wat betekent het om op ethische wijze te werken binnen artistiek en participatief onderzoek, los van checklists en standaardformulieren? Hoe gaan we om met belangrijke thema’s als toestemming, auteurschap en de dingen die op het spel staan bij artistiek en participatief werk? Tijdens deze sessie verdiepen we ons in vragen ronde Consent in Actie, om te leren van artistiek onderzoek. Hierover schreven wij een artikel. We gaan uit van drie kernprincipes: kwetsbaarheid, verschillende vormen van toestemming, en aandacht voor macht en positionering.

 

What to expect: 

We will first sit together and conduct a short close reading of some parts of the text and then we’ll work in groups on the three topics tackled in our research. The group will be asked to discuss each one topic based on the questions we will provide and try to relate to similar experiences form their own artistic and/ or research practice.

We zullen eerst een aantal passages uit onze tekst samen grondig lezen. Daarna gaan we in groepjes aan de slag met de drie principes. De groepjes bespreken elk onderwerp aan de hand van een aantal vragen. We vragen de deelnemers een verband te leggen met ervaringen uit hun eigen artistieke en/of onderzoekspraktijk.
