Staging Cancer explores what it means to live with a serious illness, and how methods drawn from the performing arts can support participants to reclaim a sense of ownership over the creation of their self-narrative. Between November 2025 and January 2026, participants co-created songs together with professional artists. These works were presented to an audience of peers, relatives, and healthcare professionals in February 2026 in the form of an album presentation. The project specifically focused on patients from marginalized social positions, as determined by occupational status. In the workshop, we will present project findings and invite audience members to participate in meaning-making exercises, using art-based methods employed in Staging Cancer.
We will present project findings via audio and video materials. The audience will be invited to take part in meaning-making exercises, to experience the art-based methods used during the project. You can expect engaging with music and writing, and with creating a Rich Picture – a drawing-based storytelling method.
Staging Cancer is a multi-year project developed by researchers from the Department of Medical Oncology (Amsterdam UMC), in collaboration with researchers from TU Delft (Health Design) and a group of professional artists. The project aims to integrate scientific research, art, and palliative care. Its ultimate goal is to incorporate the performing arts (theatre, performance, music, scenography) into supportive care for people living with advanced cancer. Besides eight participants, ‘Staging Cancer’ involved contributions from Gerty Van de Perre, Loulou Hameleers, and Robbert Klein (Club Gewalt), Marcel Dolman (scenographer and lecturer at HKU), and Harm Goslink Kuiper (musician and visual artist).
